In the ' 80, Paris had been an instrumental capital of the French-speaking African music. In addition to the language asset , the work of some (Martin Meyssonier, Mamadou Konte, Radio-Nova...) promoted the discovery and the interest of the French public for West African productions.

A dangerous Home Secretary Minister issued some warrants that quickly put an end to what was punctuating the Parisian nights then - and, on the way, generated considerable financial incomes from which profited the country.

Many electric griots had to droop their kora to face the problems of visas and other administrative rejoicings, and a battalion of African musicians chose to fold up towards London, where things appeared simpler : today, African music produces more sterling pounds than French francs.

Anyway, French now have a responsive ear to the great voices of West Africa, and to their so particular way of singing .

This is why French take an interest in Africando: at the origin and at the levers, a great African producer, Ibrahima Sylla, which since 1979 had made a success of fusion between salsa and m'balax ; on mikes, Pap Seck, Medoune Diallo and Nicholas Menheim, which fell into the pot of wolof songs as kids ; on brass and percussions, some hotshots of Yankee, Cuban, Dominican, and Portorican salsa.

The repertory navigates between the Caribbeans, New York and West Africa, and shed a new light on some treasures like El Carretero (renamed Ken Moussoul Guiss Li) by Cuban Portabales, in an astonishing wolof version.

Once again, music throws a bridge between oceans and men, and neither Pasqua, neither Debré, nor even Chevènement can change great matter there : give them a record by Africando !
