A childhood marked by the deaths of his mother and of his eldest brother by overdose; later drifting in drugs, accidental death of his son, suicide attempt by defenestration, to say nothing of his murdered mother-in-law and having his own house burnt ... until its death in 1993 at the age of 47.

The musical life of this astonishing singer to the tragic destiny born in 1946 is related to that of Willie Colón, with whom he formed a tandem without equal from 1966 to 1973.

The records from the 60's will be solitary, and the career of the tenor to the style callerejo (street style) will know eclipses due to his drug addiction.

But this inspiring singer of the Fania company, fragile and attaching character, will always be backed by his old friend Willie Colón, who will ensure the production of his albums.

Learning of his death, Willie Colón paid his emotive respects to Lavoe during a concert in Sevilla (Spain).
